ABOUT STOP THE MENOMONIE DATA CENTER

We created the Stop the Menomonie Data Center group in response to the announcement of a proposed Data Center in the City of Menomonie.

Our mission: to get all the relevant facts and figures as they relate to the proposed data center and to make those facts available to the general public (not limited to City of Menomonie residents) so that all stakeholders can make their own decisions and take action as they see fit.

These issues include, but are not limited to:

Economic Issues:

● High upfront initial infrastructure costs that may fall on the community (road improvements, utility upgrades)
● Jobs created may not benefit local workers
● Potential impact on local property values
● Perpetual utility costs that City residents (water) and NW Wisconsin residents (electricity) may have to pay

Environmental Issues:

● Massive electricity consumption that may strain local power grids
● Significant water usage for cooling systems, potentially affecting local water supplies
● Heat emission and potential noise from cooling systems
● Increased truck traffic during construction and for ongoing maintenance

Community Impact Issues:

● Enhanced digital infrastructure may benefit residents and local businesses
● Corporate community investment may generate sponsorship opportunities
● Potential for educational partnerships with local schools
● Increased traffic congestion, especially during construction
● Potential strain on emergency services and utilities
● Possible impact on residential property values near the facility

Long-term Issues:

● Data centers typically operate 24/7 with long-term commitments
● Technology changes rapidly, affecting facility lifespan and upgrade needs
● Corporate ownership changes could affect community relationships and commitments

We welcome civil, informative, factual discussions on any aspect of this project. While we disagree with this project in principle, we also understand and are sensitive to the fact that Menomonie needs to grow/attract businesses that will create a net benefit for everyone in our community.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, concerns, or issues that we may or may not have addressed here.
